As a magic player, I've always been more a deckbuilder than a player. Winning a game is (hopefully) a function of the deck idea working correctly. Therefore it's always been more fun to try and think of new ideas for a deck that succeed than smashing faces with a netdeck. Pete has a particular player name for this that I always forget, it's like Edgar or something.
But there are two problems with creativity:
(not picking on green/white, other colors have similar isues)
Both of these cards are SO FLIPPING GOOD that almost any deck is improved by tossing them in. VoR is obviously the worst in this regard, evidenced by Pete's shaming "blah" when he was compelled to add, but the Smiter is serious business. Every deck has to have an plan for the 4/4 (or worse!) on turn 3.
Maybe I just need to learn to stop worrying and love the bomb, but that's a lot of creature to have to handle. By definition that limits a lot of deck style. I'm pro-creature; nobody enjoyed the All-Counterspell deck that one kid on the playground insisted on playing. But it seems to limit creativity.
To draw a parallel with the another nerdy hobby that I enjoy: Starcraft 2. I get that there are gameplay/meta limitations. You can't say "no rush 10 minutes" and complain that your plan only failed because zerglings started streaming. But you can bend playstyles in SC2 with good scouting etc. If your opponent cheeses you, it's your fault for not scouting the onrushing cheese. You don't have that option in magic until you get to sideboard the second game, which is inherently limiting.

(edit: punctuation)
there is a reason why limited is better
ReplyDeleteThere's something to that. But just thinking about drafting stresses me out.
ReplyDeletei kind of enjoy the RU cyclopean combo that was out there for a while. is that viable or creative enough?
ReplyDeletealso, start drafting with m14. way less stressful.
You might have a convert. Just be gentle with me; it's my first time.
ReplyDeleteits really kind of fun.
ReplyDeletemaybe there is an FNM draft at a place less competitive than card kingdom? in tiny charlottesville we have one store for more douchey types and one where the more casual crowd gathers.
The raygun lounge. They run four pods on Saturdays. And fill them by skill.
