Basic Lands: Khans block

As we aim to build the best possible 'basic lands box', we are doing a retroview of the basics since I came back to Magic. Our goal is to pick one or two from each set and then see if we can build a good draft box of basics (3-4 of each basic land). Previously done:

The Lands

Plains Plains Plains Plains

Mountain Mountain Mountain Mountain

Swamp Swamp Swamp Swamp

Island Island Island Island

Forest Forest Forest Forest

I've never noticed that each clan has one basic land of their own color! For example, the Sultai are rocking these three with their vaguely Angor Wat-ish ruins.

Forest Island Swamp

where Jeskai have the following remote monasteries
Island Mountain Plains

That's actually pretty slick! Each artist was assigned to a particular clan (Noah Bradley did Mardu etc.) Interesting how each clan got two of its 'emphasis' color. So there are two plains for Abzan, two islands for Jeskai etc. Very cool!

Highlights

There's a lot of good stuff in here but also a lot that's a little too  'khans specific'. I'm glad that the Abzan are desert wanderers but I don't want giant sand dunes in my plains.

I don't really care if Florian de Gesincourt does a bunch of digital work/touchups, that's fan-freaking tastic.

This does rather shamelessly violate the rule of "Gosh, I want it to look like the land-type it's supposed to represent" but damn, that's a really cool piece. I love the focal point of the palace with the waterfalls rushing around it. Some really cool detail with the terraced slops as well. Just very neat.

My Wife's Favorite

In what may become a recurring theme, Elisabeth picked the one with the brightest colors and fewest skulls.

If I had to pick a swamp...

Credit where credit is due: this is actually looks like a swamp yet isn't just a pastiche of blacks and grays.

Let's talk basic lands: Theros

I've had a pretty good streak of horrific drafts that I don't... really feel like inflicting on anyone. So let's talk about something I'm more qualified to think about: basic lands! Listen, nobody wants to be that guy that just shows up with a pile of mishmash lands from the bin. Frankly, nobody really wants to be friends with that guy either. A little thought and effort can reap some excellent rewards in tastfulness and class.

Jed's Classic Five

Loyal readers will note that I semi-obsessively curate my lands from the early days of magic when we shuffled without sleeves and thought Moxes "sucked because they were just lands" Also, only jerks played black.

Island Plains Forest Mountain Tempest: Mountain (C)

A fun project might be to clean up a landbox for drafting with the Super Happy Mega Fun Friends. Have 20-30 of each basic land, depending on how many Quality Arts I can find. Let's also add an additional filter: lands from when I seriously came back to magic i.e. Theros block. We need to get some swamps since there are so few good swamps. Also not everyone may share my love of the Unlimited Plains and it's white border. Let's gawk at some art!

Theros

Plains Plains Plains Plains

Mountain Mountain Mountain Mountain

Swamp Swamp Swamp Swamp

Island Island Island Island

Forest Forest Forest Forest

Wow, Theros had some great stuff! Four artists (Steven Belledin, Raoul Vitale, fan-favorite Rob Alexander, and Adam Paquette) each did a cycle of basics. Not a ton of individual artistic differentiation, though Raoul Vitale did do a lot of fantastic detail-work, as is his wont.

To me, one piece jumps out from the rest.

That... is a really gorgeous piece. I'm always a sucker for the more sweeping landscape vistas. I want it to be a "forest" not just a tree dammit.

Other pieces that jumped out at me. Image result for forest adam paquette

Having a giant glowy piece in the middle is a *bit* of a cheat to inject epic-ness but it's still a very cool piece.

If I have to pick a swamp...

I think Steven Belledin's get the nod here:

Draft with special guest star: Chris!

We have a very special episode of magicanotes here for you today! Coming down from his lair on Cap Hill we have our very own Chris Gabble co-piloting a draft with us. Team C-Jed (the portmanteau 'Ched' was vetoed as we draft with too many Chads) has a strong track record of drafting ridiculous aggro decks with the occasional rare-draft thrown in for spice.

Torrential Gearhulk
But it's like, $30!!!1!
So how did we do?

http://draftsignals.com/draft/-Kx6dz97QH0-wvU8QZfl

Holy SHIT what the hell happened? A weak P1p1 but you can start a draft with a cutlass and not feel TOO bad. Running black removal and then Wanted Scoundrels feels pretty good. Then the playable black cards completely dry up and we start taking some decent white, thinking vampires. Then we get a fair signal:

Pack 1, Pick 7

Rigging Runner
Flavor text win too.

Great card and we move into red. Above average playables (a late Sure Strike, Fathom Fleet Firebrand, etc.) continue to flow late so we feel okay about this. We got some options in pack 2. Given how little black we passed and how early it dried up, we're thinking that we'll get hooked up in black on the backswing. Loyal reader, for whatever reason, this didn't happen. We got tricked with some early decent black (pick 4 Scoundrels!) and we mentally committed to red black aggro. Then the black completely dried up and the white flowed like wine. So many passed Hammerskulls. So many!

But still, we can make this work. We got the tricks! The removal!

Everything, it turned out, but the creatures.

Yup, that's right, the rarely seen 15 creature aggro deck. Still, we could have some pretty nutty draws with this thing. Some great removal, some great tricks. Will the shuffle gods cooperate?

Nope!

Sometimes shit happens. I think that the player on our left made a bold move into black for... reasons. Maybe they opened a Vraska in pack 2? This left us with a dinosaur deck but we were in black, not white, and the oomph just wasn't there. Fun draft though!

Ixalan Binge Drafting

I had a nice window of opportunity when my wife ran off with our child to get some grandma time in New Jersey. I sat by the window, mournfully looking at the rain beating down while a piano plays in a minor key.

No, I tell a lie. I binged drafted all week. Woooo!

Inaugural Ixalan Draft! 10-1-17

Got the morning to myself when my wife took Helen to breakfast. HOW FAST CAN I DRAFT AND PLAY THREE ROUNDS?! GO GO GO GO.

Pack 1

Pick 1

Charging Monstrosaur Tocatli Honor Guard Otepec Huntmaster
Well that's not the rare you want to see but that IS the mythic uncommon you want to see! The Monstrosaur (not... not a great name R&D) is a pretty easily windmill slam. The Huntmaster is pretty good but you want to get those to power out your Monstrosaur.
